Verena Witthuhn
Verena Witthuhn is a German designer based in Porto and Hanover. With an artistic approach she explores new methods of creating with natural, durable and reusable materials, while using traditional and modern technologies to produce objects that are both functional and playful. Her design practice begins outdoors, often in natural sites within urban environments. Working outside with found materials sparks a sense of curiosity and openness that drives her creative process. ‘‘I follow what intuitively attracts me and begin to experiment, sometimes starting from simple gestures inspired by traditional craft.’’ These actions often lead to unexpected forms and ideas.
This nature-based, exploratory way of working has evolved into an ongoing research practice focused on regenerative and environmentally conscious design methods.
Being outdoors provides direct access to materials, light, and space, while spontaneous conversations with passers-by offer an informal form of reflection. Her practice challenges the expectations of the conventional studio or office environment, questioning where and how designers can—and perhaps should—work today. Art plays a vital role in this process, serving as a tool for thinking, sensing, and expressing, and allowing to connect material exploration with intuition and imagination.
Through the project DUBLO studio, she extends this approach into a multidisciplinary practice that spans material research, process development, furniture design, and spatial installations. Deeply engaged with natural materials and responsible modes of production, the studio brings together traditional crafts and new technologies to create sustainable, expressive, and playful objects that bridge innovation and artistic intention.
